Making Little Boxes 2.0

With Karen McAuley: Sunday, August 16, 9am - 1pm

ABOUT THIS CLASS

Level: Beginner to Advanced Learn three different hand building techniques to make small clay boxes with lids: After cutting simple shapes from flexible clay slabs, we will bend and fold them into little formal boxes embellished with fine details. Beginning with a chunk of compressed clay we will carve, cut, and dig out a rugged, distinctive box in the Japanese kurinuki tradition. Using just our hands to pinch and shape the clay we’ll explore a truly intimate way of creating a box uniquely our own. We hope you’ll join us! In this workshop we’ll use only clay purchased from OPCS. Templates will be provided and many other tools will be available. Feel free to bring your own tools, too. Especially useful are pottery knives or X-Acto blades, serrated metal ribs, pin tools, and sturdy metal trim tools.
